His technical competencies include flood risk management/assessment, drainage design, dam spillway adequacy studies, dambreak studies, environmental hydrology, water supply option studies, irrigation, hydropower, mine water management and design of hydraulic structures. He is a specialist adviser and practitioner in the fields of: river hydraulics, river engineering in fine-bed to gravel-bed Rivers, morphology of rivers, sediment transport; scour; flood control and flood mitigation. He has been involved in hydrologic, hydraulic and water resources system modelling and the development of strategies for integrated water quantity and quality management.
Silver is recognised as an expert in the water resources field and has been a member of the World Bank and Asian Development Bank Panel of Experts for a number of water infrastructure projects.Ian has been involved in water supply strategy planning and yield reviews for Sydney, Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) the Hunter and Central Coast water supply systems. He has undertaken environmental flow studies for the Snowy, Murrumbidgee, Hawkesbury-Nepean and Shoalhaven rivers and for major wetlands, including the Lowbidgee. Ian project managed water savings studies for Gwydir, Macquarie and Lachlan Valleys through improved metering and river operations and was involved in water savings studies for Darling River Basin targeting savings in excess of 500 GL/yr. He has done hydrologic and spillway adequacy studies for major dams such as Hume, Wyangla, Burrendong, Windamere and Keepit and has been involved in design and safety reviews for numerous mining dams.
